Description

This is the dry storage section of the Edmonds marina in Edmonds, Washington. A couple of people have 'fessed up to not knowing exactly where I am. Edmonds is about 20 miles North of Seattle, Washington, on the West Coast of the United States. Here's a map. Keep zooming out until you know where you are. Dry storage is for power boats, not sailboats. If you think about masts and keels, you'll understand why! They have this huge forklift, and they pick the boats up and stack them in these racks. When you want to use your boat, they go and fetch it for you and bring it to the launching facility. There's this huge double sling, and they put the boat in the sling, and lower the boat into the water. I've found a link to the Port of Edmonds Marine Facilities page for those of you who like to know about this sort of thing! You know who you are! :) To me, this is sort of like posting a picture of a parking lot. I've taken several pictures of this dry storage lot, but never posted them because I look at 'em and think, "Shoot - nobody wants to see THAT, it's boring!" I'm told it might not be as boring to everyone else, since they don't live here! I couldn't help doing some postwork, though. Trust me - the boats are pretty much all white to start with, and a color version of this isn't much different!

Well I confess I thought Seattle was in Canada! But it's close! My USA geography could do with an intensive course. I quite like this shot, I can compare these facilities with our own rather different ones. What a shame they are all whitish!

Well I have never seen anything like this in my life. I have to agree with Dennis, it looks like they are ready for the great flood. If I was a boat owner I think it would make me nervous having my boat hoisted up there. But then I don't know that I would want a boat on the bottom either in case the one on top fell. I guess it is a good thing I only own a canoe that I store in my garage.

I have heard of dry dock, but this is a first for me Tara, I just assumed they berthed them in a Marina if they weren't being used, or taken home on a trailer. I must admit I have never given it any thought before now. So yes it is quite interesting you know I like to learn things every day, I'm just as inquisitive as you. I would love to be there to watch the forklift collect or deposit a couple, I would be clicking away like Billy'o. Excellent capture and an interesting informative narrative as well. Superb work. Bravo!!!!!5+++++ I'll follow the links now, Thanks.

Me too, never seen anything like this before. You have captured this well, an excellent B&W composition. Thanks for the information, I was fascinated to hear that they pick them up and bring them for you, forklift trucks and slings Wow! amazing stuff.

Holy smokers, Tara, since I've only been exposed to boats moored sitting side by side in the water among our local marinas I had never dreamt that there was such a thing as a stacked drydock or parking lot of sorts for these vehicles. Startling for sure. This is a quite efficient method of saving space. And I don't find it boring at all. Educational and informative, but not boring.

Hey, I'm from the Texas Coast and we had similar facilities down there. So this sort of reminds me of home. Excellent shot!

The b/w works well here. It's not so much the color that is interesting in this as the composition and the amazing sight of so many boats dry docked.
