Description

As well as the heroes fighting in the war, there are also thousands more at home, fighting in their own way to keep the country running whilst their menfolk are away. My sister-in-law was one of them, so I use her as an example, she drove a fire engine in the war years, that was the reason for her learning to drive in the first place. When the war was over she let her licence lapse and didn't renew it until 1968, she couldn't aford a car until then. Lots of women went into the factories and did all sorts of work, work that needed to be done. They were second class citizens until they were needed for the war effort. So this image is dedicated to all the women out there, I think they deserve it. Without them striving to keep things running smoothly, the war could have had a different ending. There were of course men that didn't go to war for one reson or another and so I have included a couple in this image. The sweep, I don't know maybe he was to old, the entertainer(he could sing pretty good). The Milk cart was attached to the cycle of the lady above it talking to the warden. The lady with the horse has a badge on her arm denoting 'Forewoman' I wouldn't argue with her. The other land army lady was just browsing the market. Please zoom for more detail. Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make. May the sun shine down on you, where ever you are.

In Russia they call them "rabotniki tyla" i.e. workers of the rear, to differenciate from those who were fighting in the front. Both worked for the main great cause. Now the former proudly have the title of war veterans. And it is fair. Thank you for your wisest reminder and a most wonderful collage.

MY mum was the fire chief's chauffeur in Leeds during t'war, and had to cycle in every time the sirens went. Even if the all clear went before she got there she had to cyle in to report before she went back. The Green goddesses were kept under an arch in an old stable yard and had to parked facing out ready to go, of course. Mum and one man were the only 2 people who could reverse them in through the arch! Another super set of pics, Jeff. Thankyou!
