Description

Not the real Tardis of course, this one is used by the staff on the trams, for keeping their personal effects in. I saw one of the inspectors get a bag out, with a flask and sandwiches in. These type of police boxes were a common site on streets, the phone was still insitu behind the little door, the white sign on the front did have instructions on for using it, unfortunately they did not come out. The outside phone was used by the public to phone the police, whilst inside was a phone for the policeman on the beat to use to contact headquarters. There was a blue light on top of the box that used to flash when headquarters were trying to get in touch with the beat bobby. He would see it flashing open the door and then speak to headquarters, remember this was before hand held radio and the telephone was the only way to keep in touch. The clock next to the police box, made by "The National Time Recorder Company of London" was used by the tram personel at the terminus for clocking in and out, so that the tram company could tell if you were on time or not. Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make. May the sun shine down on you, where ever you are. Sunny here today but still bitter cold. Have a nice weekend.

Oh yes, those old phone booths, as we called them here in the US ~ they're all but gone now, replaced by hard plastic cubes, IF you can find one!! Great shot, Jeff!!

Great capture the lizard skin plug-in is very useful tool to give this colour, Wasn't there a lizard skin monster in Dr.Who. I know someone who is a big Dr.Who fan and has tons of memorabillia in his garage including a couple of hundred Dalek toy robots (not full size lol) He has seen this at Crich and he pointed out that these doors are on the wrong way round and they have put the windows in the top, you can't notice it here but I think the panel that has writing on, is upside down on the original photo. I think I know whats coming next!

  • sigh * I'm totally lost. I have no idea who Dr. Who is, I don't know what Alan's on about (or anybody else, for that matter!) and all I can say is that it's a well-composed photograph with beautiful colors! LOL! We don't have either of these things in the States. Of course we used to have phone booths, but they were nothing like this, and none of them were for police. Even though I am sans clue, I still like your photograph!

What a great capture! And the information is great, especially since I am not familiar with this at all and the customs of the police in your country - past or present.

love this image - the english had great "street furniture" - hope some of this remains. in holland we had telephone booths too - they were removed and scrapped. replaced by flimsy poles with a telephone. as they gave no privacy, the telephone company decided to put some new, flimsy, closed ones for private calls. you had to pay extra for making calls from these. it's a crazy world.

A very interesting image Jeff and an excellent explanation. Is that a stove pipe sticking out on the top? Sig...

Very well seen. At first when I saw your picture I thought : "He found the doctor!". It's only after 30 seconds that I read the title, lol. I think you could get a better capture if you stepped back a few and zoom a little to avoid the wide angle deformation effect.

What an array of obsolete "high tech" devices for a time now only kept alive in re-enactments like this.
