Description
This is loosely modeled after a certain helmet that appeared in the Lord of the Rings films.
The base poly cage is 770 polys, subdivided twice for 13475 polygons, a bit heavy right now and will need some optimizing for the final model. The skullcap portion of the helmet was modeled with polygon snapping (thanks Teyon) and then once I had about the shape I wanted, all points were scaled up a bit, and then the edges of the eye cutouts and the bottom edge of the helm were extruded, scaled down and moved inwards a bit to give the illusion of thickness. The "ribs" sticking out were modeled with standard extrusion with a little scaling and wiggling at their bases to get the "socket" look. Still a lot of detail work I'd like to do but this is the general shape for the helmet. Going to start on some body pieces next.

Great modelling work. Mask looks good, original. The workflow you describe seems a bit "painful", maybe Zbrush extract tool would have been much more efficient in this case.
