Description

Berlin, 1923. Inflation on it's tide. In October a Dollar was 40 Billion Marks. Wages were paid three times a day. When you were lucky you could buy a loaf of bread or half a pound of butter or a pound of noodles before the new exchange rates were known. If you had no foreign currency you were fighting against starvation. But if you had Dollars, Pounds, Franks, whatever; or if you were in the black market, everything was different! Berlin, 1923. Premier of Bertold Brecht's play 'Baal' - a flop. MAN introduced the first serial Diesel engine car and nail polish was on the market for the first time. Berlin, 1923. Anna Deborah Jespersen, nee Perlmann was born - my grandmother. Berlin, 1923 was not golden, but it was also fun! The restrictions of pre war era were gone. If you could afford it there was a party every night. Gay people didn't hide anymore (female that is, for males there still was the threat of imprisonment), but it seems that no one did care. Women delighted to dress in (male) morning dresses, or underwear or... nothing?. Gay or straight. Party waitresses appeared with a small fig leaf as a dress, if that. Claire Waldof - a famous singer - outed herself as a lesbian (praise her). Berlin, 1923 was not golden, but it was fun, a lot of fun (if you had money, just like today). No one knew they were dancing on a vulcano... 1923. Hitler went to prison for only one year for an attempted putsch (crimes coming from the right wing of politics were hardly punished at all, contrary to left wing crimes) and Marlene Dietrich appeared in a few little screen roles, 5 years to go to 'Blue Angel'. What we now call the 'Golden Twenties' is still a year ahead, 5 more years to 'Three-penny-opera' or 'All quiet on the western front', only 6 years to the Black Friday market crash. 10 years to the catastrophy of Nazi government. ***** A pic I found in the attic, hope you like it. ***** Have a wonderful weekend! Have fun (if on the vulcano) ;-)!

Where do I begin!? This is a brilliant piece of work that I am surprised and dismayed that I missed when it was originally posted, but ah...the joy of a gallery means that I can see it at any time I peek in. I love this image and the narrative that accompanies it is superb. Both hold a sense of poetry, either written or visual, and the patina of age works so perfectly there that there's NOTHING I would change. This is an inspired image, accompanied by an inspired narrative. "No one knew they were dancing on a vulcano..." That line blew me away! Your work is of superior quality, and this is an outstanding example of what you do best.

Absolutely great, particulary the lettering. You hit the history. I love this "fin de siecle" brown/white style. Very well done!

Adding this to my favorites; it's brilliant, Dorothea. Like the profile pic too. Sorry, haven't been around at all for quite some time, so much catching up to view all my favorite artists. Later, my friend.

Hitler was certainly enabled by the vengeful attitude of the British and the French - and at least from what I can determine, there were at least as much at fault for the travesty known as the "War to End All Wars" (yeah, right) as Germany... Had they not been so cruel in their demands of the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler might never have become any more than a petty loudmouth like Rush Limbaugh (though that bastard has certainly done his fair share of damage to the world). "crimes coming from the right wing of politics were hardly punished at all..." Frightening parallel to the modern U.S. ...Department of "Homeland (Heimat) Security" goes after dark-skinned people and left-wing socialists, but hardly ever pursues the "White Aryan" freaks (who have done far more damage...remember Timothy McVeigh...?) Of course, we all have 20-20 hindsight...don't we?

Ah...messed up my first comment. Love the image -- great sepia tones! The timeline is an extra cool touch...provides background. Would love to see more like this! :-) You have an interesting style.
