Description

Taken today at Healey Dell Nature reserve. The trail is on a path high above the River Spodden at this point. the fairies chapel is accessable by descending a number of steps. The strange rock shapes and misty atmosphere make the folklore of wicked fairies, witches and robin hood almost plausible. There was a 17th century Woolen Mill that once stood in the surrounding area, chosen purposely to make use of the water-power. The Mill was know locally in Lancashire dialect as "Th'owd Mill i'th Thrutch" On the river bank there is an old waterwheel pit, derelict stone "fulling tanks" and remains of sulpher cellers. The cloth being manufactured was Wool and not cotton at all, in order to make it wearable it was finished through a process known as Fulling, this changed the weave from a very loose knit to a dense, closely woven material. In the background to the picture lies a 105feet high and 200feet in legth, disused Viaduct taking the Rochdale to Bacup railway-line. All information was gained from The Healey Dell Trail guide. Thanks for all you kind comments and support, and I am feeling much better.

I know just what it's like to climb those steps Alan I have done it quite a few times, I have an old 35mm shot with Emma in it when she was about ten. I see you have the holy rock in the picture but not the hole, I have often wondered about that, why it's there? how was it made so?. Excellent shot, I must admit that I prefer the other viaduct though, the one further down stream. Sounds like you had an enjoyable day out. Bravo!!!!!
