Description
Hi folks. Long time no see. The reason I'm posting today, is because something has come to my attention, and I think it's critical that every one of us, in the artistic community, knows and does something about it.
Let me start by asking you, how many images do you have at RR? A few hundred? A thousand?
What if you had to pay a registry for every one of those images, or anyone could use them, and it would be totally legal?
What if, in fact, to truly protect them, you had to pay several registries, for each one of them?
Could you afford it?
Now imagine if you had to pay several registries for EVERY SINGLE IMAGE YOU'VE EVER TAKEN, or anyone could use them, anywhere, at any time, WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION.
How many photos have you taken this year? A thousand? Ten thousand? That's just this year. How many photos have you taken altogether, in all the years you've had a camera? Hundreds of thousands?
Can you afford to copyright them all in multiple locations? I know I couldn't.
And if, like me, you couldn't, are you willing to accept that any of them could be used without your permission and with no compensation to you for them, at all?
Because that's exactly what could happen.
Think it's not possible? Then you haven't heard of the Orphaned Works Legislation that is currently being pushed through Congress.
If you are an American citizen, ( and even if you are not ), we, as creative people need to do every single thing in our power to see that this bill does not pass.
For more information, I urge you to take the time to read this article.
Or, if you prefer, you can read the excerpted version that I have posted in the forum.
Either way, you owe it to yourself, and every person you know who cherishes the right to their own images, to do something about this... Today.
Thank you for your time.
All my best,
-Marlene :^)

Great piece of work Marlene. Thanks for the info on the legislation, you can usually rely on the US (and therefore sometime later its lapdog the UK) legal system to suck the fun out of everything! Sounds like a crackpot idea to me, I hope common sense prevails... It would never happen in France... or Italy... or Australia or ... [add sensible country here]

I was familiar with that legislation & glad to see you posted these caveats in your gallery; I've been active in that in music & writing & it's just as serious in art...as for your picture: In addition to your usual professional approach to your models, this piece is all New York: It's not just NY because of the titles and landmarks, etc. (which you've collaged very nicely!) It's NY because of the teeming feel, the cloistered vibrating din that Manhattan gives off, especially Midtown. When I lived on the Lower E. Side, we'd walk to Midtown and gape like kids at the congestion & overwhelming life—and that was the 70s!—and you felt it was the center of the universe. You got that here in spades. And I love how you melded-in your family & probably a lot of other people & things I wouldn't know—it feels like a valentine to a lot of people in your life. Most of all it has saturated hues packed tight, and it's a blast. Terrific job: Manhattan don't need no steroids: It's naturally out of this world.
