Description

Hello all!! May day doesn't seem to be as celebrated here in the states as other countries but when I was a little girl my family celebrated it by putting flowers in strawberry baskets , ringing the door bell then running- leaving them on the neighbors door steps . Also we read about the Victorian May pole dances with my Mother. I would get real excited about mayday cause I got to play ding dong ditch and not get in trouble lol..., and oh yes make up pretty floral baskets out of the garden. Some of my childhood friends didn't even know about the holiday but I think it was a tradition that was in our family due to my English Grandmother. Just looked this up on the internet: --------------------------------------- Roots of May Day celebration in America: The Puritans frowned on May Day, so the day has never been celebrated with as much enthusiasm in the United States as in Great Britain. But the tradition of celebrating May Day by dancing and singing around a maypole, tied with colorful streamers or ribbons, survived as a part of the English tradition. The kids celebrating the day by moving back and forth around the pole with the streamers, choosing of May queen, and hanging of May baskets on the doorknobs of folks -- are all the leftovers of the old European traditions. ------------------------------------------------ Anyways my daughter Janel brought this home for me yesterday on her walk home from school and it sat on her blue coat and looked so pretty I couldn't resist attempting a macro with it (taken with a Nikon 7900). Painted and smudged the background to smooth the jacket texture. I thought it would be a nice floral image to wish all of you that celebrate (or don't celebrate hehe) a happy May Day!! pretty sure its a poppy ... BTW poppies are our California state flower here -they are everywhere always thought poppy covered mountains look like to me as if God ate cheetos and wiped his hand off to clean it along the mountainside - ( lol I wrote poopy at first ...). ...geeze I wish we still celebrated it here like in Victorian times would be so much fun to dance around a may pole hehe.... ((( btw i took down the ((( "day" ))) bit in may day in my title cause it seems some people have a bad feeling about mayday out there and wouldnt want to offend anyone... ))) Thank you for all your time and comments ! love to all! ((( BIG HUGS ))) ♥ ~ kimmers ! :O)

Beautiful colors. I love that combination. Wonderful May Day gift here. Thank you! May Day has always been special to me. I love May pole dances and I too remember creating baskets to leave on people's doorsteps. A wonderful tradition often now neglected. Thanks for sharing the memories and stirring some of my own. : )

Beautiful Kym! The color combination is amazing. When I was a little girl we did the May Baskets too. Usually it was a basket made of paper and I'd put flowers in it and my mom would take me to Grandma's house so I could leave her flowers on the door. When my daughter was in Catholic Elementary school they'd always take flowers for the Virgin Mary on May Day. HAPPY MAY DAY! ~Melinda~

That is a beautiful flower so appropriate for the occasion. May Day used to be a holiday here, until the government got all upset that it was a Communist celebration back in the 50's. Politics can be so brainless. Until then, as a child, all I knew was the fun of it. Politics was not in my vocabulary. I would be for bring May Day back as a holiday, and getting politics out of the picture.

Splendid shades of amber and lighting effects in this macro, Miss Kimmie! Gigantic military parades were held during the hey day of the Soviet Union on May 1. Cinco de Mayo in the latin countries south of the border. Also, rioting by illegal aliens in downtown Los Angeles on May 1, at least last year. Hope it isn't that bad this time.

That looks like a Poppy... which is neat, since I just planted some Poppies. (Actually, I planted them as a prank in my brother's peat-pot in which he is sprouting corn ... heh heh ... ). May Day is also called Beltane. The only pagan sabbat not Christianized. Beautiful shot. I just showed it to my brother (hoping he did not see my comments about the prank! lol!) Li

Beautiful macro! Yes, we had May Day in grammar school here when I was a child. Haven't seen a celebration of this since. All we get here in California is Cinco de Mayo. I, too, would love to see May Day get better attention. ;o)

I was all ready for a communist manifesto, a military parade with missiles on trucks, and Kimarie on the reviewing stand... I think the flower idea, and dancing around poles, is much better. excellent, in fact

I remember doing the May pole celebration at school (in Canada) when I was little. But the May pole was part of a more general school spring time celebration which involved races and other skill competitions. This was more or less intended to motivate us kids into outdoors activities after a long cold winter. I don't recall having a May Queen though we knew of the tradition. But I seem to recall making baskets for each other in class.
