Description

Dance Floor (Near) Disaster Dancing seems to be in my blood. I tap danced my way around a fountain at my brother’s baptism at the age of 5, was on stage by 7. I rock and rolled all thru high school, slow danced cheek to cheek with my boyfriend every chance I got, boogied my way to all the concerts I could. Even as an older, “responsible, respectable” adult, I put on my tap shoes again and was back on stage. I even took ballet and jazz dance classes for several years. Then, for all kinds of reasons, I stopped. Life got in the way, as it does and my dancing seemed to stop for a long time. But my feet still twitched and tapped and tingled every time I heard music. I missed dancing, any kind of dancing. There’s a freedom in dance, be it classic ballet, funky jazz, free form modern dance, or just the wild gyrating free moves that pass for dancing anywhere. So a couple of months ago, when my brother called one night and asked if I wanted to meet him and my sister in law to go dancing, well, I said “Oh, yeah, I’m there”!!! You need a little background here first to set the stage for the way this evening went. Brian (my brother) is a dancing fool, does a mean two step, BUT, all he likes is country music. Now, I can live with a bit of country, but if I wanted to dance, well, country it was gonna be. So off I went, dancing shoes on, ready for whatever the evening would bring!! Brian decided to give me some lessons, or at least show me the basics. It was an easy two-step, and he’s a good leader. I got it down pretty quickly and we did a few turns around the dance floor. He and Michelle (my sister in law) danced the next couple of songs and I had a chance to dance with another friend. Then Brian grabbed me and off we went, and I felt like I really had it down. Oh, we were dancing, twirlin, spinnin, turnin all over the place, movin around, in the groove!! Then, well, then we missed a turn, our hands slipped, and I was launched, backwards, across the dance floor. I couldn’t stop, and I just kept going and going, faster and faster, feeling like I was going down, hard!! Thank heavens there weren’t many people there, cuz I was a train wreck ready to happen. I felt like I was going to fall, do a back flip, a somersault; I was out of control!! But, I didn’t fall, I didn’t do that back flip or even a somersault~~~I finally stopped, just short of someone’s table. This all happened in about 10 seconds, all Brian could do was stand there and watch. I came to a stop, regained my balance, and caught my breath. Then I looked around and realized that once again, I’d been on stage!! I had an audience and they applauded wildly at my performance!! Course this wasn’t exactly the best act of my life, but well, what the heck, I took a bow!!! My feet still have the moves, my heart still pounds to the music, and yeah, I DO still love to dance!!! And Brian, what did he have to say?? “Good thing you weren’t pointed at the bandstand!!!” 5/4/08

My motto is to always hold on to your dreams....it doesn't matter how old we are or how much time has passed....we can always keep that dream alive if we just feel it and allow it to live within our hearts and our minds....I've never been much of a dancer but I've always loved to sing...I sang with 2 different local bands in my younger years and as a teen I sang with the school choir...I'm older now and my voice isn't what it used to be but that young lady of many years ago still lives within me and she makes me smile whenever I think back to the memories of singing before the crowd....very well written my friend...hold on to your dreams!

Been there, done it, worn [no, burnt] the T-shirt. Seriously I love dancing. I won the Adult Disco competition at a holiday camp aged 57. I'd only entered to partner a friend's daughter, who desperately wanted to take part ... and the organisers were dreadfully shocked when they took my details, because the winner was allowed to go through to the National Finals. Of course, I refused in favour of the second-placed man who was of a more appropriate age. Thanks for a well-told story which stirred an amusing memory - your applause was indeed well-deserved! Mike

Your written snippets are always such fun to read! You have a love of dancing (and of life itself) that comes through everything you write! I love that element in your art, in your writing...especially when it concerns the little things that people might tend to overlook! The capture that accompanies this fits the image perfectly!

"All the world's a stage...." Glad you enjoyed yourself, and seems as tho, everyone else enjoyed you as well. Now, western boots, spurs, western hat, women's chaps and a western shirt with collar points attached. Let's see a photo...lol.

Dancing in the dark...... My goodness! Shades of Fred Astaire, Buddy Ebsen, Gregory Hines, James Cagney, Sammy Davis Jr, Tommy Tune, Ann Miller, Ruby Keeler, Shirley Temple and Eleanor Powell, plus all the nameless chorines in those wonderful 1930's musicals. I've probably left out a ton of other hoofers. You would have been a perfect fit for the madcap era of the 1920s: doing all kinds of flapper stuff, e.g., the Blackbottom, Charleston, etc., drinking bathtub gin out of your shoe, plus dance marathons...

LOL! Great story, well written! You should write more stories like this - I know you've got a million of 'em, because I've heard several, and they're all entertaining! Nicely done. Keep up the good work!

It is always a joy to read your stories, Marilyn. You make me live the event with you, as well as relive events in my own life. It is so great to see someone enjoying life with gusto. This story is a winner! Your photograph is perfect, adding visual to your story in just the right proportion. Excellent work.

Wonderful tale of tapping toes, and sounds like your fingers enjoyed the tapping on the keys to relate the story to us all. Keep em coming! : )
