Description

I met " Guajiro" in Cartagena, Colombia he was the official guide of the Inquisition Museum, later we found out there are dozen of "official" guides. I asked his name and he gave me " Stanislaus" and every last name in his lineage, he then told me it was easier to call him guajiro. The natives of the desert state of La Guajira are called guajiros. He did not know much about the Inquisition or anything but he balanced with his humor, the only thing was that he kept repeating the same jokes and anecdotes. After the pretend tour was over, most of the tourists did not tip him; I did. After a little while he came and asked me how he had done and I honestly told him that he kind got stuck in a few places. He said " I know, it drives my wife crazy, ever since I got sick with the "dengue" a tropical flu, I have not been the same" He said that he foolishly refused to go to the doctor and he got violently ill. He just laid in his bed until he fainted. He goes to the doctor now because of his occasional burning fever. I tried to lighten it up by paraphrasing one of my favorites books "..and with a burning fever negro Acacio kept on dreaming of sand storms and iguanas with woman breasts.." He smiled and said " Isabel Allende, Huh. See my memory is not that bad " I am glad I got to talk to him.

Wow, excellent portrait and story. I know a couple of years ago I got very ill, and was sick for months. I came out of it with less memory - forgetting people's names, and everything. I'm still rebuilding my memory - even though it was not quite as bad as this. Wishing the gentleman well, and I am so glad you tipped him. He did deserve it for the effort.

The human face can have such character-this one is a landscape painting all its own, you have told us something about the erosions/storms that have been etched in it - very fantastic portrait.
