Description
Palenque de San Basilio, a village near Cartagena, Colombia, was founded by runaway slaves who resisted many Spanish attempts to recapture them. The men of Palenque (who are largely invisible to the larger society in the city) cultivate the fields while the women arise early in order to board old buses and trucks in order to take their agricultural goods on the long ride to the city.
