Good evening to you all! Another pic from the carnival of cultures here in Berlin! Time to show some of these beautiful groups and write some sleeve notes..... This is the Brazilian-Berlinian group "AFOXE LONI". This group works in the tradition of the "Afoxe Blocos", a special sort of carnival from Bahia del Norte, a brazilian city in the NE of Brazil. "Afoxe" is the african name for a music instrument, the calebasse, the african pumpkin, used as a rattle. Typical for this group are the white and yellow clothes, they have a spiritual meaning. Most inhabitants of Bahia del Norte have african roots, and so all songs were sung here in Yoruba, the language of Angola. "Afoxe Loni" was founded 1996 special for our Carnival here by the jazz musicians Dudu Tucci and Murah Soares from Sao Paulo and the Berlinian percussionist teacher Christa Zeißig. It is good tradition meanwhile that "Afoxe Loni" opens up the caravan of carnival trucks. The whole group here has ca 60 singers and dancers and 60 percussionists. They come from all parts of Europe and from Brazil. "Bloco Afoxe Loni" is meanwhile a sort of cultural ambassador for Berlin. They played at many different european cities, in Mexico and Taiwan, although at the Expo 2000 in Hannover. Uff!
