Description
Ruins of a Cornish Tin Mine, taken in southern Cornwall, England. From the 1500's through the 1800's, Cornwall tin and copper mines were among the richest mining areas in the world. As the times modernized, there were many buildings that comprised a mine, like the winder house, boiler house, blacksmith's shop, processing plant, etc. But in the earlier days, there were no other substantial buildings besides the engine house, which had to be built strong and sturdy to house the pumps and other machinery. The pumps had to pump the water out of the mine shafts, deep underground, the steam engine being located in the engine house. I found these fascinating, but our tour did not bring us near any, this was shot quickly when the driver stopped so I could get out. If I were ever lucky enough to make a return trip, I would love to travel up and down the coast seeing as many of these as I could, exploring how they worked, see how the machinery operated and was maintained and repaired, as that was the nature of my work for many years. These mines dot the landscape, and are very picturesque, especially when partially overgrown with plants and vines. Thank you very kindly for your views and comments.

While your image is beautiful, your text is far more interesting for me. I suspect in the later days they used a Newcomen engine, then Mr. Watt's improvement.

Fabulous you have done Cornwall proud with your images.. The industry on it's death led to a mass migration of Cornish miners to the rest of the world, the sad fact is that without the pumps the mines were destroyed despite the price of tin and copper these days.

I've heard of Cornish game hen, but never a Cornish tin mine. Splendid colors and lighting effects in this shot of the structure and landscape well contrasted/silhouetted against that fantastic cloud-filled sky, Maria!
