Description

Still at Smith Rock. According to my local guide (Jill) the boulder that's balanced in the gap is called Monkey Rock. I think it looks like the bird, Woodstock, from the Peanuts cartoons. She says it looks much more like a monkey from the other side. That's Black Butte in the distance. This one is for my friend Doug (Unstrung65), because he loves the desert. When I showed him some of the pictures I took at Smith Rock, he made me promise I would post THIS one in particular. I agree - it's one of my favorites, too. Thanks for your feedback, Douglas - love ya, Babe! :)

Wonderful shot of the transition; shooting from the dry side, looking toward the wet side. It's also interesting that there is still snow up there. Black Butte is only 3000 feet tall.

What a great shot!. You are doing a wonderful job of showing how beautiful Oregon is. We have it all...ocean, mountains, fantastic waterfalls, rain forests and high desert. Ahh, life is good in Oregon.

A clever use of natural framing ... it certainly enhances the sense of distance. The colour differential is a textbook example of aerial perspective. Great photograph. Mike

I like how you have used the rocks as a frame, its a brilliant shot and what a fascinating place. The first thing that stood out was the Monkey Rock and how precarious it looks. Well done Tara!

Super POV and DOF, along with splendid colors and rock textures, in this magnificent capture, Tara! And from this angle, Monkey Rock looks just like any other nondescript boulder. Incidentally, is that mountain in the distance named Black Butte? If so, what an unusual moniker for a mountain. Actually, I thought it was Mt Fujiyama at first.

We have a Black Butte here too. I used to live only a few miles away from it but it doesn't look like this. Ours is lower and has a big lake and it looks more like buttes and less like a mountain. this is really a fabulous shot though between the dusty rock.

Lots of interesting faces on the walls that frames the snowcapped mountain. Lion on the right wall. Excellent shot. Aloha
