Description

In 79 AD, Mt. Vesuvius erupted with such massive force it destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. It covered the city of Pompeii in meters of ash, burying its citizens alive where they stood. Herculaneum lay a distance away at the entrance to the harbor, most of its citizens escaping before the city was also totally destroyed. From available information, the city of Herculaneum had already disappeared from the face of the earth as early as late afternoon on the first day of the eruption. According to a letter in which Pliny the Younger described the sequence of events, the sea route via the harbor offered little hope of escape for the citizenry. The road to Naples, however, was still passable. Ash and water fused into a horrendous river of slime which rolled implacably down the mountainous slopes into the city and outward toward the harbor. Altho I was very patient in recreating the Roman structures for the city, it became a nightmare of grand proportion, so I decided to not include them...the city was destroyed almost immediately, anyhow. I have included the rolling ash cloud outward over the harbor area...this is known as the pryoclastic ash flow. Vesuvius, itself is not included in the render. I have used artistic license, so it is not a technical render. It was a bit over an 8 hour render time due to all of the special atmospheric effects and overlapping spheres. Dramatic and awesome render of that historical eruption that turned people to ashes by the thousand within minutes...Your Bryce illustration of the catastrophe is absolutely fascinating and magnificent. Your narrative and the vision of the eruption you offer us almost gives me gooseflesh! Brilliant work, Keith, you're the best...

Wow Keith, when you were explaining this one to me in your email I had no idea it was going to be this good. This is probably one of your best images to date. Fantastic landscape, exceptional lighting and atmosphere. Great story to compliment it as well. Tony :-)

Blazing hot render! That rolling, roiling smoke cloud came out excellent, as did the rest. 8 hrs?! My computer would protest and freeze, most likely just before the render finished...

Very well thought out, and you know your history---we studied all that in Latin class in high school, long ago, and I still remember some of it. Great job on the render!

Wow, bringing ancient history to life here-- there sure wasn't CNN back then to bring us live, on the spot coverage-- but you've conveyed the horror of it all vividly here~~stunning image!!

A very interesting and informative narrative and background info for this one Keith. I recently read 'Pompeii' and this brings the feeling of that event to the screen. The rich 'depth' of the ash plume against the clouds and red sky is as always stunning and these deep skies are becoming a 'Photostar' trademark! Excellent job!
