Description

It's been a while since my last upload. The weather here still isn't my idea of great but I got a message from everybody's amigo, Roby, and I grabbed my camera to get a decent shot to post. This bird is an Indigo Bunting and it comes to my backyard every year around the end of May. I find them to be very camera shy and have missed so many shots by a few seconds. I'm still waiting for that perfect shot but here is one for now. I dedicate this one to Roby for getting me off my butt and outside with my camera. Thanks Randy

Wow... one of my very favourite birds! I've only seen one in the backyard in the past 20 years... and it was such a thrill! I've done alot of research on Indigo Buntings since then and was really surprised to learn that their feathers are not blue. They have almost clear feathers (over black or brown ones) which refract lightwaves in a very unique way. The iridescent blue color is not a result of pigmentation. The structure of the feathers causes light to scatter or reflect, giving the feathers an often bright blue coloration. The blue color changes with different lighting. The Audubon Guide says, "Indigo Buntings are actually black, but the diffraction of light through the structure of the feathers makes them appear blue." When it comes to bird feathers, the color blue is an optical illusion. Indigo buntings, bluebirds and blue jays are not true blue, because their feathers do not contain blue pigments. With birds, blue is a structural color, created not by a pigment but by the physical structure of the feather. Indigo bunting feathers also show a little iridescence, which means the same feathers can look different colors from different angles. Iridescent or "interference" colors - very visible in hummingbirds - do not depend on pigments but on a feather structure that interferes with light shining on the bird from different angles. Iridescent feathers scatter more than one color. An awesome capture, Randy... thanks so much for sharing this one! :)

Wow, wonderful capture (and great info from locomouse!) I have Stellar's Jays here, very big bright blue birds with black heads (and topknots), and they're also very striking. Never seen a bunting, though, at least if I did I had no idea what I was looking at! Nice work!

Wonderful capture, regardless. This is an amazing bird from the description. I don't believe we have seen any of these birds around here. I'll check my Roger Tory Peterson book about it. ;o)
