Description
The Boscawen-Un Stone Circle, located in the Penwith District of southern Cornwall, England, is a Neolithic oval stone circle, 82 feet by 73 feet in diameter, with 19 stones in the oval circle, and one large phallic stone in the center. Dating back to around 2500 B.C., it was thought to be a Druidic or Bardic meeting place and Ley Lines connect Boscawen-Un to other stone circles in Britain. The center stone leans away from the camera towards the point of the midsummer solstice, and it is said that the rising sun on that morning illuminates a carving of two axe heads that cannot otherwise be seen. What is fascinating about the stone circles, is that there are a number of them that have 19 stones ("The Merry Maidens" stone circle is not far away), and it is thought that they correspond to the "Metonic Cycle" (discovered by Meton of Athens in 432 B.C.) which shows that for the moon to appear in the exact same place in the sky with the exact same positioning of the stars takes just under 19 years. Yet many of the stone circles predate Meton by thousands of years! Coincidence or no?! Long pano, best full size. Five minutes after taking this shot, the heavens opened and we stood in the center of the circle while it rained and hailed like crazy for about 15 minutes, which was a totally awesome experience. Really impressive photo of the phallic stones all equally spaced in the oval circle. The culture way back then really had a thing for rocks and stones. And by stepping on the sacred grounds you apparently angered the Druid gods who unleashed that deluge of rain and hail.
