Description

A keypoint in comics is that the anatomical features of a hero or of an heroin must have the slightest possible variation, whatever the pose, the expression and the angle of view, because somebody in the real world behaves so. Here this is slightly more difficult because in volume 1, Silvia begins 2 years old and finishes (see my picture indicated below) at 16. 3D functional models such as Poser, Daz Studio and Quidam are a true advantage for the comic illustrator, even working by hand with pencil and ink, because these virtual actors can be posed, seen under any angle and lit at will with only small residual errors, those retained by the models commercially available today. Quidam figures are much easier to customize inside their native application than Poser or Daz ones. I started from Silvia as adult, because she was since years ago available as a clay bust (aged 23-25 years), and I downscaled her anatomy to transform her into this very young girl. You see here my first attempt. However, I do not consider the current head as entirely satisfactory. Therefore, today, when I have to draw Silvia at 6 to 8 years old, I make a compromize between the clay bust and this model-sheet. You can see a picture of Silvia in action here:
Silvia 6, when hesitation means death

My drawing site www.elcet.net is currently out of order, but I have recently opened a site to present the Silvia comic project. It is here:

"Silvia (the adventures of Silvia Robin)"

This is not a public site. I have done it for the fun of friends, but more important is to help me to improve the project. So every comment will be welcome by writing me an email through the Contact button. The whole site is French/English, except the balloons which stay in French. The bad point is that, because the project has not been published (nor there is a publisher for now), the access to comic pages is restricted. If you are, since some months, one of my friends, or somebody who favorites my work, or one of my favorites, write me an email, and I will give you the access secret code. But without code there are tenths of drawings in 3 galleries to enjoy!

From what I've seen of the web site (so far) the story should be quite interesting. And what a skillful utilization of Quidam in creating this character. BTW, I've recently purchased Argile after checking into it after you made the suggestion. I think it'll fit my needs quite nicely. Thanks! Well done Edouard.

J'aime ton côté perfectionniste et analytique, Edouard, aisément détectable dans le commentaire pour cette composition dont je serais bien incapable d'envisager même la modélisation minimale. Bravo l'artiste!

Quidam 2 has some pretty good features. As of late, though, I have taken to ZBrush instead. Either way, moving polygons around helps customize old meshes. Is this a model you plan to draw (Rapidograph like)or are you going to use the mesh and vectorize the render for your Graphic Novel?

An excellent character and some great pointers on the production of comic and graphic novel sequences using such characters. Very interesting indeed!

You've done an amazing job on this Edouard! As I know Silvia as an adult I could see her also as a child in this version.
