Description

My apologies to Mike (Meico) and Mina (Nekhbetsun) for this picture. I know you two are probably about to jump out of your skin! Take a deep breath, and move on to the next picture. I'll understand, I promise! For the rest of you ... This is the Crooked River Gorge. When you pull off the highway here, there are signs in front of every other parking space that say something like: Caution! 300-foot cliff ahead. No pets allowed. Supervise your children. I've seen far better photographs than this on the web that were taken from this general area, but I wasn't willing to climb out over the wall and stand on the edge of the cliff, or get up on the bridge, in order to get a better pov. (Middle aged, flip-flops, straw hat, camera - remember?) The railway bridge was completed in 1911. Awesome historical postcard shots here! In order to build the bridge, the workmen had to climb down a rope ladder, cross the river, and climb back up another rope ladder. Talk about a tough job! It's 320 feet from the river to the ridge, and the bridge is 460 feet long. (That's from end to end - the canyon is about 340 feet across.) B&W is in honor of the age of the bridge. The canyon, of course, is quite a bit older.

Yes I agree, sometimes I like to live a little dangerously when I want to catch a good shot but this is close enough. Fantastic shot and view!

I always think about how they build these things. Love it in B&W gives it that ole timey feel.

Excellent B&W, Tara. I'm glad you got to see this. It's one of my favorite stops on that road. It was interesting to watch the progress as they built the new highway bridge you drove across to get there, too.

This captures the terror just fine! I'll take the long way around, thanks. (And I like your definition of a weed being a plant you don't want somewhere--you put into words a thought I've had for some time -- or did you swipe that from Thoreau? lol)
