Description

This next image in my Hobo series depicts another thing I never had the guts to try when I was a hobo: straddling the couplers (referred to as "riding the bumpers"). It's the most dangerous way to ride a train. In the past there was a more dangerous way, but it's now obsolete: it consisted of crawling under the train car and hanging on to the support rods on the bottom (something train cars no longer have). It is the origin of the phrase "riding the rods", which is still used as hobo slang for riding freight trains.

It's a good thing you didn't try that otherwise it's very likely you wouldn't be here today showing this photo. Let's hope your photo doesn't inspire someone to try this foolhardy stunt. In all other respects it's an excellent work. Please try a different theme next time.
