Description

Without a doubt, this is one of the most magnificent works of mankind. The vast, cavernous scale of this basilica (contrary to popular misconception, Saint Peter's is not a cathedral, as it is not the seat of a bishop) is hard to imagine unless you have stood in it. Construction on St. Peter's began on April 18, 1506 and was completed in 1626. Located within the Vatican City, it is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter. Catholic tradition holds that his tomb is below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes, starting with the first ones, have been buried there. In terms of the set-up for this shot ... St. Peter's is really tricky. Unless the sun is shining, the inside of the basilica is very dark. No problem if you have a tripod, except those aren't allowed in the basilica, nor--for that matter--outside Vatican City anywhere in Rome. Of course, you could shoot at 400, 800, or 1600 iso, but you'd be starting with a compromised, grainy master. Before going to Rome, I did deep breathing exercises and practiced holding the camera really, really still, which got me to 1/15 sec @ 100 asa. Additionally, I purchased a small table tripod and a one-legged tripod for surreptitious shots.

Your deep breathing exercises clearly worked, as this is a gorgeous shot. What a shame that they don't allow tripods - this place is crying out for the full HDR treatment!!
