Description

While I am doing sun rays (see my last post on the bottom of this page), here are three light rays through the roof of Antelope Canyon, also known as Slot's Canyon. What an amazing place this is. I had planned for this trip far in advance since one cannot enter this native Navajo sacred area without an Indian guide and because the lighting conditions require some research and preparation. Here's the background story to this shot, one that had providence on my side. When I arrived at the departure place for going to the Canyon, the company I had made an Internet reservation with told me that they couldn't find my reservation and that all tour spots for the day were booked. As I left the place dejected and fuming at the prospect of this photo op having been lost for good (since I was moving on to another part of Arizona without returning to Slot's Canyon), I stumbled unto Chief Tsosie, who was making preparations for leading his own photography tour of Antelope Canyon. At $50 per head, the tour wasn't cheap, but the Chief knew exactly when to depart so that we'd arrive in time to set up our cameras for the hard to capture 3-beam shot, which only lasts for minutes before the sun's angle changes and the lighting conditions in the Canyon change. After the three beams had changed to two and then to only one, the original outfit I had booked with arrived. That's what I call "Glück im Unglück," a German saying about having luck in an unlucky situation. On a different and less fortunate note, some years ago, several German tourists made the long trek here only to be told by the local guides that the weather conditions were dangerous that day. Not letting themselves be dissuaded, they entered the Canyon anyway, and all of them were killed in a flash flood, the kind that often sweeps through Arizona canyons during the winter. Caution advised! Here's the other sun ray shot of the day: thumb_1692202.jpg

The back story highlights the preparation and sometimes a bit of luck that makes the special photo like this fantastic example. I predict this will make the LWITG choice.
