Description

Full disclosure: The poor butterfly was cropped and pasted against the pealing paint background and a drop shadow added, because I thought they go well together, considering the little guy got his butt chewed out, probably by a bird. I noticed he had a little trouble flying, "porposing" I think the aviation engineers call it, loss of stability in his pitch, but he still managed to get around ok. In a photography book my wife bought, it suggests you carry around a little cooler with dry ice, in case you see a cool insect, you can freeze it, render it dormant, and get any close up shot you want. The cryogenics doesn't hurt the insect, so they say. I refuse to do this. Just because something is small doesn't mean it's okay with being yanked out of a hot summer day into an arctic environment, having its picture taken, then being thawed out again. It's cruel and intrusive, just for the sake of a silly photo. Unless we're talking about hornets and wasps. Those I'll freeze no problem. Hate those damn bugs.

A very interesting and nice capture of this swallowtail butterfly which has nearly disappeared over here in the area where I live, owing to pesticides and rampant urbanism. I remember catching a lot of them when I was a child but stopped doing it the day I saw a friend of mine nailing one on the door of his parents'. The spark of life that animates us is the same as the one which animates every living creature.

Great image. Kinda feel sorry for the little guy. It was nice to hear that he's still getting around even if not so gracefully.

I really do like the background work here. Great shot. And I hear ya about wasps. Although I still really want to get a good shot of one soon. ;-)

you did super here and I think you right about the freezeing of bugs. It like some one drug a human and pose the person anyway they wish and photography the drug person and then let the person come to, it be the same would it not?

I like everything about it. The Butterfly. The concept. The background. The composition. The color palette. The postwork. The informed and concerned attitude about how we should or should not interact with the world. Well done in all categories. Thanks for sharing. Lee

Wonderfully done, the natural framing of the peeled off paint makes a fantastic framework and the blue is such a lovely color to accentuate the lovely yellows in the butty.... well seen and a great shot!!!!
