Description

DaNang waterfront seen from onboard a LARC (Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo) travelling on the Han River. LARCs are about 10m long boat-shaped vehicles with 4 big wheels and a 300hp diesel engine. Both Navy and Army detachments operated these vehicles out of DaNang AB. They were used to go into the bay where cargo ships were anchored and each LARC was loaded with three crates, each crate containing six 500lb bombs. The LARCs then transported these crates to a variety of bomb dumps through the city. We went for rides with them on our free time. It was something different to do. The building on the right is a Catholic Church. This picture was taken in July 1967 as a slide, a print was made in 1969, and in 2004 I scanned the print. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my uploads and a special 'Thank you' to those that may have added some of these images as their favorites, Sig...

The Mark 80 series bombs, and the TER's and MER's (triple ejector and multiple (6) ejector bomb racks) were designed by Douglas Aircraft before 1965 when I arrived. Because a MK-82 was like shoes to an attack aircraft it was the first thing (as ballistics) I input into my TRS-80 in 1979 as a lingering memory converted to BASIC2. This is a real window into life that was motivated by friendship for the Vietnamese people. LOFAR (Jezebell) sonobuoys began my peek into raytracing.

Sounds like fun Sig, riding bombs in your free time. Lol. It is certainly something different in my book. Riding bombs, it's a wonder you didn't need the church in the picture. Superb capture of the waterfront, I wonder how much has changed here in forty years? I was 19 years old 1967 and I think of things as if it was just a few years ago, I can remember things quite easily from then. When I write it down as forty years and think, it was a lifetime ago. Excellent image Sig, you certainly traveled a lot with your job(even military service is a job) and went ot some interesting places. Bravo!!!!!

Wonderful history pic, brother! The lot of boats and the market scene, great! I love this chaos! I´m very interesting how it looks there today! Maybe they have build some skyscrapers with lots of blue glass windows and have cleaned up the market for the future tourists as the chinese do.... Old fossiles like me love the old style more - i´m a dinosaur...LOL

It sounds a little extreme to go sitting on a cargo of bombs in your free time Sig, Its a great picture documentation of how people lived or still do in parts, living in the clutter of shanty type shacks on the waters edge spilling out onto boats on the water, and next to the more fortunate people. Great that you have saved this all this time Sig, Thanks!
