Description

This is the house where I work and live. The house consists of the basement with a tool room, the electrical panel room, the furnace and one long room for storage and laundry. The stairs lead up to the back door to the back yard or turn the corner to the next flight and you are at hall before the dining room. The kitchen is at the back of the dining room, with another door to the back yard.To the left of the kitchen is one bedroom, main bathroom, and a pantry. Kitchen and pantry are inaccessible except by staff. Exiting the dining room leads to the small hall with back stairs leading to the second floor, one bedroom at the base of the stairs and then turning right leads to the living room which has bay windows and a window seat. Exiting the living room is the hall to the front door, at the right are front stairs leading to the second floor, a small storage closet at the base of the stairs, one bedroom on the right and my room on the left (with the bay windows), the foyer which has double glass doors and a small entry that leads to the front porch. The second floor has 4 bedrooms, 2 large (double occupancy) and 2 small, another bathroom and at the end of the long hall is what used to be the back porch, now enclosed and used as storage, a linen closet and another door that leads to the attic. The attic would make an excellent art studio or a 'penthouse' sized apartment. I am estimating this house is at least 4000 sq ft. It's a bear to keep warm in the winter and a bear to keep cool in the summer. The backyard now holds my garden and is approx 1000 sq ft. The house is in major need of repair, we do our best with very small funds to maintain the inside but the outside is in desperate need of rotting wood replaced and painting. Window boxes were added this year by me, made by my maintenance man, and filled with flowers bought by me, Alex and my neighbor. I also added some wildflowers in keeping with my love of 'natural' nature and flowers and ferns by the steps. The backyard is where I take the majority of my photos of the birds, squirrels and whatever else wanders thru:-) I am the sole cook seven days a week with the exception of a day off here and there, mostly there. But my maintenance man does the major cleaning on weekdays and I do light cleaning on weekends if needed. The smallest room goes for $80 a week and the largest $112.50 a week and meals are included in the rent. I classify this house on the 'endangered species' list because it will cost more to repair than to start over:-( It is for sale but in the two years I have lived here many have looked but no offers made. I wish it was mine...Last asking price I heard was $125,000.00. Thanks for looking and for previous comments!

It's a really interesting account, Lynn, especially accompanied with the photo of thye property, which has seen much better days. You are right about the woodwork being in critical condition, which doublwefolds with each year. Personally, the house is doomed and you don't sound like living here the rest of your life.

This is so interesting to see where you live, Lynn. And such an excellent account of the layout as well! It sounds an incredibly low price, but I suppose folk are scared off by the repair costs.

I do not see why you cannot buy the house being it is for a boarders.Classified as a business in stead of a private owned home. All you really have to do is show it is making money. That is really a good price for a house that size.Ours was a 128k one story 3 bedroom .You can get your closing cost paid for by the owner by raising the house price to compensate. That is how we did ours it was 124k :)

What a great old house, Lynn and fantastic description and history. I always wanted to buy and restore an old house very similar to this one, but never had the opportunity to do so. Thanks for sharing this.

It looks cosy and comfortable. For sure, there is always maintenance in a house and I know what I'm speaking about. My previous house was built in 1875 ! Good shot Lynn

It needs some work, but it's still a great place - and a really good bargain for the rent (at least compared to around here). I envy you the bay windows!
