Description

The star attraction of Muir Woods is the Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens). These relatives of the Giant Sequoia are known for their height. While Redwoods can grow to nearly 380 feet (115 m), the tallest tree in Muir Woods is 258 feet (79 m). The average age of Redwoods is between 500 and 800 years old, with the oldest being at least 1,100 years old, which I believe makes them the oldest living things on the face of the planet. One hundred fifty million years ago, ancestors of Redwood and Sequoia trees grew throughout the United States. Today, Redwoods can be found only in a narrow, cool coastal belt from Monterey to Oregon. Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the forest is regularly shrouded in coastal fogs, contributing to a wet environment that encourages vigorous plant growth. The fog is also vital for the growth of Redwoods as they use moisture from the fog during the dry summer. Click here for Beachezz's scale shot of humans-to-redwoods. That's so true. As I've written in the blurb .... the tallest of these is 258 ft, so try to imagine based on that how small a person must be in comparison!

Superb photo of this forest I saw only a little part of, over twenty years ago, near Monterey. Superb lighting and magnificent vista.

One of the things that I imagine a person feels, (and rightly so) would be just how small and insignificant we are as human beings. I have never had the privilege of standing in their presence> I can only imagine the sense of majesty and awe! Thanks for sharing this! Lea
