Description

"The Thinker" is a bronze and marble sculpture by Auguste Rodin held in the Museume Rodin in Paris. It depicts a man in sober meditation battling with a powerful internal struggle. It is often used to represent philosophy. Over twenty casts of the sculpture are in museums around the world. The one depicted here stands in front of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor (often abbreviated to simply Legion of Honor by locals), which is a fine art museum in San Francisco, California. The name is used both for the museum collection and for the building in which it is housed. The museum contains a representative collection of mainly European art, the largest portion of which is French. Its most distinguished collection is of sculpture by Rodin. Casts of all his most famous statues are on display, including one of The Thinker in the forecourt. However there are individual works by many other artists, including FranÃ�Â§ois Boucher, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, David, El Greco, Rubens, and many of the Impressionists and post-ImpressionistsÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½Degas, Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, Seurat, CÃ�Â©zanne and others. There are also representative works by key twentieth century figures such as Braque and Picasso, and works of contemporary artists like Gottfried Helnwein and Robert Crumb.
