My name is Tony Shaw and I have been working for a UK Bank since I left school in 1983. I have spent from 1990 working in their IT department as a software developer. With the threat of redundancy hanging over me next year, and having written a web-site for my Dad, I decided to train myself up in web and graphic design and as a result found Renderosity.
The graphic tools I'm using in my spare time are Adobe Photoshop, Bryce, Apophysis, Terragen and Vue ... I don't have any particular favourite as they all have their good and bad points.
I have not posted some of my very early works as they are quite basic and would not look out of place in comics, however I hope you will take time to browse through my gallery so far and any comments, whether good or bad will be greatly received as they will keep me motivated and hopefully improve my designs.
Happy rendering.

I agree with previous comments that great images don't necessarily need to be photoreal - but the thing that made the most progress towards photoreal images for me was using Ambient Occlusion, GI or GR lighting modes. This can add considerable time to your renders (there's always a catch!) but I believe it is worth it in terms of realism - if that's what you're after. Great image by the way!

This is definitely the type of coloring you want for a fantasy image!

This is kinda disheartening _ I have an old copy of Vue 4 I never used... I took it out alongside Bryce 5.5 which I grabbed free a few months ago when the offer was on.... been playing with both... I too have experienced some craches... was going to ask you for some tips so I hope you are going to stick with it! :) Love this piece - what are you doing the models with???? 5+

a scene awash in early morning or late day hues, that transition-time when everything seems suspended in unreality & dreams. It's very peaceful as a result. The silhouette of your boat & plants against the deep reds & red-yellows is striking; you got just the right amount of light on the 'backside' of all these things (the side facing us); and the shading is quite tactile. Yet the whole scene seems to float towards that diffuse sun in the distance, as if the goal is out of reach but wholly radiant. And the overall feel is of a moment before everything begins, when the world seems at utter rest and we can experience contemplation without interruption. Beautiful, moody and spacious. A beautiful work.
