Description

-Full name:Utahraptor ostrommayorum -Utahraptor was first found in eastern Utah (in the western United States) in 1991. -Lenght 5-7 m.height 2 m,weight around 1 ton. -Lived 132-119 million years ago,Early Cretaceous period. -Was a carnivore, a meat eater. It ate just about anything it could catch and tear apart. When hunting in packs, it could probably kill any prey. -Raptors or dromaeosaurs intelligence was the highest among the dinosaurs. Thanks for another fantastic dino image. I greatly admire your ability to model these creatures in Lightwave. I've read Robert Bakker's "The Dinosaur Heresies" (Zebra Books, 1995)- very interesting book. I've compared the raptors with present day animals- their claws and teeth are very similar to those of several large modern insectivores. My suspicion is the raptor family used their claws to climb on and rip open dead trees to get at the insect colonies inside. The "Jack the Ripper" attribute doesn't match the teeth, if compared to the allosaurus and larger meat eaters. I have a feeling some paleontologists had a rather lively fantasy upon discovering the raptors due to the curved claws (remind me of a cat's claw for climbing). However, I enjoy reading your explanatory notes, which are very good. Please do keep up the good work! PS- I'm an anatomist by trade, with an interest in dinos.

This is great, nice sense of action. As you probably know the USA's Dinosaur National Monument is in Utah. It's in an out-of-the-way place but well worth a detour if you're ever in its vicinity.

Lovely evocative image. T.Rex I believe some (possibly only semi-serious) studies were done on the sickle claw not too long ago. While I tend to believe that raptors were more meat-eaters than insectovires, insects were probably a bit bigger back then anyway! LOL. But I digress - the examination of the sickle claws claimed to show that there was no cutting edge, which would seem to make it an unlikely tool for cutting, tearing, or shredding meat (unlike carnivore teeth which are usually shapr and often serrated down the edges). The conclusion seemed to be that they would be great for making puncture wounds, perhaps great for getting a good grip on an unwilling victim, but not a weapon to slice the gut of a victim with to eat the still-warm entrails. This also seems to fit in with your "tree-climbing/ripping" idea. For the climbing part, I'm a LITTLE leery given that only one claw per foot is a sickle claw, but sitting back and accepting the standard theory of anything is a good way to stagnate - thanks for introducing a new idea to me.
