Description

The British AVRO 'Lancaster' was a four-engined heavy nightbomber that was used during WWII. It was also used during the 1948-49 Berlin Airlift. I saw one of these land in Berlin-Tegel and after it touched down during heavy cross-wind the right gear collapsed. No major damaged, and the runway was cleared in a short time, because many aircraft were stacked in the approach pattern. During the Berlin Airlift the Allies - American, British, and French supported West-Berlin, a city of 2.2 million inhabitants, entirely by air. This AVRO 'Lancaster' is taxiing for take-off at the Reading, PA airport during an air show. This 'Lancaster' is the only flyable example of its kind in the world and is maintained by a Canadian group. This picture was taken on 3 June 2006. I'm aware of two still flying: "City of London" maintained by the RAF Heritage Flight (I believe that's the name) and the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster (callsign VR-A) maintained by the Canadian Warbird Heritage. I believe the one in the photo is City of London. After the war, Lancs found all sorts of new roles. Trans Canada Airlines (predecessor to Air Canada) used them for passenger aircraft.

Great photo of a true classic airplane. Glad the neighbors are taking good care of her.

I love the details you give with each picture. You want to go to the 2009 Reading WW2 Weekend?
