Nótese que la fiesta se celebra la noche que va del 23 al 24 de junio, aunque en realidad la noche más corta corresponde con el solsticio de verano, el 21 de junio-. La fiesta de San Juan se celebra en lugares tan distantes como Finlandia y Brasil. En zonas del Atlántico europeo (Inglaterra y Galicia por ejemplo) también se celebraba el día 28, San Pedro, una fiesta similar, y se sigue celebrando aún en varios lugares de la costa como la Ría de Arousa. En la mayoría de los lugares esta celebración consiste en quemar muebles y trastos viejos en la calle. La fiesta de la verbena de San Juan (La revetlla de Sant Joan) es una de las más celebradas en Cataluña. A lo largo de todo el territorio se realizan todo tipo de fiestas y tradiciones donde se reunen familiares y amigos. La forma tradicional más extendida es la quema de toneladas de fuegos artificiales y de hogueras realizadas de forma más o menos espontánea en las calles y plazas de las poblaciones.
