Description
The Ishtar Gate is housed in the Pergamon Museum of Berlin (a World Heritage Site and cavernous structure that holds entire buildings of antiquity, like the Pergamon alter). The Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was constructed in about 575 B.C. by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city and stands 47 feet high and 100 feet wide.
Originally the gate was considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the world until, in the 6th century AD, it was replaced with the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Dedicated to the Babylonian goddess Ishtar, the Gate was constructed of blue glazed tiles with alternating rows of bas-relief sirrush (dragons) and aurochs. The roof and doors of the gate were of cedar, according to the dedication plaque. Through the gate ran the Processional Way which was lined with walls covered in lions on glazed bricks (about 120 of them). Statues of the deities were paraded through the gate and down the Processional Way each year during the New Year's celebration.
About this shot. The lighting in this room is very dim, especially in the winter, mornings or evenings when the sun isn't overhead to brighten up the exhibition hall. Anything under 800 iso won't work in these cases. Another problem you might have getting a good capture is that people are constantly standing around or walking in front of you. It took about 20-25 mins. of patient waiting to get this pict just right; that is to say, to have some people in the picture to create a sense of scale, but not to have them in the line of sight in a detracting way. All I can say is, if you are ever in Berlin, make it to this museum. They have too many wonderful things you would not want to miss. Trust me. Research it on the Internet.
