Description

June 28, 2008: Spied a number of gargantuan snapping turtles at a nearby lake. This one clearly wanted my toes as a snack. I can't be sure, but I suspect the shells on these beasts measured a good 16" to 20" in diameter. This was my last morning with the rental Canan 300mm f/4 IS USM L (and also a 1.4x TC), so I was desperately looking for more subjects to shoot.

They are definitely prehistoric looking and quite bad tempered. As a kid in the 50's, I saw many on the Red River that were over 2 foot wide. They could snap all the way through a broom handle. where I live now, I get much smaller ones in my pond every 3 or 4 years. I have had to shoot a few of most I managed to capture and relocate. They eat my fish and wild baby ducks so they have to live elsewhere, lol. This is a good shot of one. Thanks for sharing. Lee
