Description

Captured 7/1/08, very early in the morning, within walking distance of my potentially placid place. These photos are of two different power poles, each situated at the northwest corners of busy intersections. They are approximately .60 mile/.966 kilometers apart. The top two pictures are of one pole, the bottom four of the other. Several types of attaching devices, shown in varying sizes, are represented here: bolts, brads, nails, screws, staples and tacks. I have no idea what prompts this activity, whether it be vandalism, bouts of drunkeness, outbursts of anger or frustration, initiation rituals, speed nailing contests, or boredom as the result of a very narrow mind. And, I have no idea when this pole mutilation began, or when, or even if, it ever ended. The metal hodgepodge begins about knee high and continues up to around six feet plus. I didn't bother to measure. Anyway, hard to find tree bark like this. Plus, better in poles than in tires/tyres. Thankx for coming by, and have a stupendous Saturday.

wow that years of posting paper on this from sings like "Lost dog' to what ever. guess it started the same year it was put up. I see holes too where some of the nails was pulled out and reused I guess.

It seems to be a common thing, we have poles covered just like these also. But here if you get caught putting up a sigh you can be fined.

This is an oddly compelling sight, my friend. I can't seem to stop looking. There's some very nice light/shadow stuff going on here, and I keep seeing all sorts of details the longer I stare at these shots. I think I like this rather more than I think I should!

I like to think of it as the remains of many yard sales, concerts, fair shows, etc. signs that once were ;) Cool shot.

mbz2662: I don't think so. Staples or tacks, yes, but it doesn't take the huge nails, bolts, and screws on display here to put up a little placard or sign advertising the events you stated above. The poles are narrow and not a wide fence. And you would have to be a 3-year-old kid or a 7-footer to read at the height many of these nails or screws were driven in. And why are these hard pointed metal things on only one corner and not on the other three corners? I've walked by these poles for a least fourteen years already and have never seen an advertisement of any kind posted.

I'm with mbz2662. I'd like to think there used to be many invitations here, to garage sales, directions to the scene of outdoor weddings and the like, but I also have to agree with you, Harry, why use big nails........(staples are more common up here). Whatever, it's a fascinating collage, and it's beautifully clear and detailed!

Yup, I'd go with yard sales, lost dogs, concert posters, etc....nail? Because people couldn't remember where their staple guns were? Heck, I don't know! Maybe they were out of staples? That's a LOT of nails! Excellent captures!

Kinda looks like a board after I've tried to make something, but of course, it's all those garage sales. I always wonder why they just don't fall down after a while--great shot!!

This is a real interesting shot and makes one wonder about this type of activity. In the long run it does have a very creative appearance to it is one wants to think of this as art. Very nice shot!!!!!

Well, that's a different kind of tree bark from you, Harry! :) Lots of folks use telephone poles to post for sale signs, lost dog signs, garage sale signs, etc. But usually some kind of staple gun or tacks is all that's needed. All the nails? Who knows? Unique shot, Harry!
