Description

This beautiful owl with a crossed beak is resting on the gloved hand of its caretaker while at a program presented a few days ago. I went for the facial portrait in the photo. Blinky because of injury of some sort has a crossed beak and this must be trimmed ever so often. In the photo, triming is overdue and Blinky's beak was manicured that evening and now is normal as need be, no crossed bill. Note the feathers and the softness. Primary wing feathers on these nocturnal birds are quite soft with "comb-like" or fimbriate (fringe-like) leading edges, assisting silent night flight. A hawk on the other hand is a day hunter and does not have the very soft feather edges. BARRED OWL Size: 43-50 cm (17-20 in) Wingspan: 99-110 cm (39-43 in) Weight: 470-1050 g (16.59-37.07 ounces)

Excelent capture Tom. Realy like a side view and a "fluffy" fetahers creating a nice pattern in this color combination. Truly so nice to looking at this photo.

The first thing I noticed was the overlap on the beak. I had a bird that needed this sort of beak trimming and it was nerve jangling to do. Not hard but it bothered me to do it. Great profile and do you have a more full body shot? I have heard of the barred owl but I am not sure I've seen one yet although I know they must be around. Too many barn owls in my area maybe and I don't know if they are cohabitants in the same territories.
