Description

Forgive me but I am guessing at a young swift These birds were so fast and obviously feeding on the wing flying very low just above the water and cicling around my head etc. I assumed they were swifts but they could be swallows or even housemartins I am not sure! please put me right if anyone can give a clearer ID. I only saw two of them land all afternoon and I was lucky to catch this guy. I have cropped quite considerably, it was quite a few yards away from me. Thanks for all latest comments

Yes it looks very much like swallow to me. A very young swallow, They usually have very little bill like your bird here. But it has a very big mouth to catch insects in the air. They also use to circulate around everywhere and often very low. It is said, that if the swallow is flying very low, it will be rain soon, because the insects are flying near the ground before rain. Lovely composition! He looks so comfortable perched upon that "branch". :) Excellent capture of colours and textures, even at that distance! Fantastic contrast of colours.... just a beautiful scene!

Wonderful capture, great pose, and I can appreciate the difficulty. Used to see these zipping around my grandparent's porch, where they had a nest, and did not enjoy us kids playing nearby, lol
