Description

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by. I've been a little behind in ebots recently as family life and work have gobbled up much spare time in recent weeks. However, I believe I'll be caught up soon. And my sincere thanks to Dave (magnus073) for the dedication of his recent Poser rendering, 'Puppy Come From She Bum'. My sister thanks him too. Chris (who is the toddler featured in the scene) was very taken by the piece and has made it her computer's desktop image. She says that she remembers the whole event too! Go take a look, it is just adorable. Thank you again Dave, I hope to have something for you in the near future. One of the advantages streetcars have over buses is that they are fast, even in mixed traffic. An ability which is neatly demonstrated in this photograph. A streetcar's guide-way (tracks) allow the vehicle to maintain constant (street) speed even while moving through a series of curves. This is true even in bad weather since the presence of water actually increases traction between steel wheels on steel rails. Buses, of coarse, must slow down to manage curving as they have nothing but the friction of their tires to keep them on course. And, as seen in the photo, CLRVs and other modern light rail vehicles are engineered to tip a few degrees when managing a curve while maintaining full contact with the tracks and overhead power. Here we see TTC CLRV 4033 slipstreaming one such curve on Gerrard Street serving the Carlton Line (Route 506). This part of the (what is now) TTC network was originally built in the post-Edwardian era around 1911-12. It was intended to serve the soon to be built suburbs of the newly annexed East Toronto. In those days streetcar lines were often built by a city as a catalyst for suburban development. The Gerrard tracks were laid down before most of the houses seen here began construction. In the pre-automobile era, working class people had to have public transportation available where they lived otherwise it was impossible to live farther than walking distance from the work place. Hence, streetcars were often the first form of public infrastructure built into a new development. And service on this segment of Gerrard Street continues to be suburban support long after buses had taken up that role elsewhere in the city. Car 4033 is on its way westbound to High Park in the west end of the old City of Toronto. The Carlton Line, like most TTC streetcar routes, traverses a diverse series of city districts and institutions: Cabbagetown, Queen's Park (Ontario Legislature), the University of Toronto, Little Portugal, Little Italy and Roncesvalles Village. Carlton also passes by old Maple Leaf Gardens just to the east of Yonge Street, former home of the Toronto Maple Leafs. CLRV: Canadian Light Rail Vehicle TTC: Toronto Transit Commission

I'm so glad you and your sister both liked my dedi to you Clayton and it was the least I could do considering how long we've been friends and how much we've shared. I love this image and it hits close to home for me as I just returned from Frisco where streetcars are everywhere and so much a part of the city. Great job

I loved the streetcars of Europe ... I'm sure these are just as spectacular. BTW, most larger cities in the US had streetcars until the early 1950s. The the large auto manufacturers conspired to eliminate them in order to increase demand for cars. :-( Anyway very nice photo. And thanks for posting.

I always love the little write ups you have for all these TTC lines (where do you get them by the way?). On a side note, I walked past Gerrard on Yonge just a few days ago!
