Description

Good evening, RR fans! Sorry, I was very busy the last days, so there was no time for uploads or even comments.... Here is another pic of "Riehmer`s Hofgarten" in Berlin - Kreuzberg; it is a pic from the inside, of course, as the others. In this moment I am working in my new job with the old construction files of old houses here in Berlin. It is very hard to see this fine backyard on my pics here and to be daily confronted with all the small, dark, overcrowded houses and backyards which were "normal" in Berlin at 1900, where people lived in cellars and lots of children died of poverty and illness..... This series will end with a shocking pic of these "normal" backyards later. "Riehmers Backyards" was a lucky place: It survived the "Great Depression" of 1929 without damage, and it survived the World War II. The neighbourhood of Kreuzberg have a speciality, the so called "Kreuzberg Mixture". That means: Living in the street house and working in the backyards, where the houses had a lot of small manufactories at different floors. Many of these backyard manufactories produced military materials: Weapons, grenades, parts of weapons, optical instruments, and that was the reason that Kreuzberg was again and again bombed by allied forces. Whole blocks of houses were completely destroyed, manufactories and living houses together. Riehmers Backyards were a lucky place: Only one side of this complex was smashed by bombs, and that opened the whole backyard to another great backyard with the same dimensions; there is recent a very large double backyard now...... They are plans to build up the missing side new. And very important: When houses are ca. 60 years old, they reach a critical point, where big repairs must be done - roof repairs, installations or stuff like this. Riehmer`s houses were very well constructed, much better as usual in Berlin at 1890-1900, and after WW II, when money was rare, all houses of Riehmers were in a good shape, when all the other houses had big problems.... And then the modern times began and the planners came..... (to be continued) Thanks for your interest. Please feel free to comment, and thanks for all of you who spent time here for looking in or wrote a comment. Have a nice weekend and good vacations if you are lucky these days. Till tomorrow Billcody

Very beautiful high-angle shot for this richly ornamented balcony. I've been also very much interested in your narrative. I can sense you like this part of the city a lot, and it shows! Excellent work, Wolfgang!
