Description

Classic 50s/60s Brit SF author Arthur J. Crudworthy found himself accidentally riding the coattails of his more successful countryman Arthur C. Clarke in 1968. Clarke's book and movie 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY were the biggest thing ever to hit SF, either in print or on screen. Everyone wanted a piece of the action. An editor at Signet Books browsing through back inventory titles noticed that Crudworthy's 1958 novel THE CREATURE FROM SATURN'S RINGS took place in 2041. That and the tenuous similarity of the two men's names prompted the anonymous editor to retitle the book and commission new artwork with a 2001-style ship prominently featured. The ploy was minimally successful. It sold most of its print run but not in numbers sufficient to justify a third print run. ---------------=*=--------------- The goal here was to recreate a 1968 paperback cover. My original plan was to mimick a Paul Lehr or Richard Powers cover but I think the final version came out more like Jack Gaughan's style. Another period aspect is that in 1968 red covers were all the rage. Notable examples included ROSEMARY'S BABY (Dell) and THE ILLUSTRATED MAN (Bantam). And again, acknowledgement and thanks to Theseus88bc, the discoverer of the long-neglected Arthur J. Crudworthy. The artwork is oil paint on 20" particle board.

This is awesome. Humorous too. This cover is reminiscent of the type of book I would buy at the used book store.
