Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera - hand held image. Yesterdays critters were Metallic Wood-boring Beetles. There are over 700 species of Buprestidae in North America. Buprestid beetles are similar to click beetles, but without the "click" mechanism. Buprestid larvae are called "flatheaded borers". They live in bark, wood, and sometimes the leaves of various plants. Identifying characteristics for the family includes: hard bodied, elongate-slender to elongate-robust beetles, ranging from 2 to 40 mm in length. Many species are metallic or bronzed in appearance, especially on the side surfaces. Antennae usually short and sawtoothed. There were a number of folks who were pretty close. Todays critter is the last in this series. It is another nymmph that will look entirely different when grown. Tomorrow I will post the first of 3 collages showing the entire life cycle of Automeris Io Moths. It took over 2 months to go from my initial discovery of the eggs to the emergence of the Moths. I will show this in three posts. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Can't do it... babies all look alike, no matter the species. LOL But this is a clean and clear shot of this whatever-it-is.

I'm looking forward to the ID of this, as I took a pic of a very similar but yellow nymph this week. I guess it may be some sort of beetle or bug larva, but I eagerly await the truth!

Well it reminds me somewhat of an Earwig but no pincers to the rear, it also resembles a pill bug as well. It will be totally diffferent when mature though so it rules them out I guess. Therefore I have no idea Lee. Excellent work, been a great series, I look forward to the next upload though. Bravo!!!!!
