Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera - hand held images. Apparently Hag Moth caterpillars have a reputation, lol. A fair number of people identified yesterday's posting correctly. Congrats to those who did so and have fun with tonights posting. (Phobetron pithecium) caterpillars are frequently seen and (apparently)usually remembered, lol. Common names include Hag Moth caterpillar and Monkey Slug caterpillar Adult moth is brown with irregular silver highlights. Tufts (pencils) of white hair-like scales on forelegs are notable. Wingspan 20-28 mm Larvae (up to 25 mm long) are bizarre brownish, hairy creatures that resembles some sort of “dust bunny” more than a caterpillar. They have three pairs of long "arms" and three pairs of short "arms", often one or more "arm" is missing and seems to be of no consequence to the caterpillar. This species is found throughout Eastern North America they and feed on broad-leaved trees and shrubs, including oaks and cherries. Caution, this is a stinging caterpillar. I did not tempt fate, lol. Tonights critters were preoccupied so I managed to get several shots on this very hot day with full sun that helped accentuate the Metallic colors but made for a difficult shot because it was so bright. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee
