Description
AlooooooHa!
Howsit everyone! This past weekend I called my good friend Eroll aka Sharky and asked if he would be interested in guiding me out to lava field to see the lava entry into the sea. He readily agreed to meet the next morning at 3am at a spot near my house to hop in his truck. We left for the lava in the pouring rain, and things looked rather dismal. But as we drove down to the lava area, the weather cleared up very nicely and the stars came out.
The lava viewing area has a locked gate that is only open from 2pm-10pm for viewing. We loaded up our gear, walked around the locked gate, past the "No Trespassing" and "Do not Enter" signs and entered the lava field. We pretty much know the risk of disobeying the signs, eh, no big deal.
The walk from the car takes about 20-30 minutes to a great viewing area. The lava in general is an old flow and pretty easy to walk on even when carrying all your camera needs. Don't be fooled though...there are large cracks everywhere and the heat from the lava beneath you is ever present. I found a decent level spot which was higher than the surrounding terrain, set up and went to work. I spent the first half and hour fiddling around trying to get the right exposure. Because the explosions are never the same, the lighting in each shot is quite different. I finally got the numbers in the area and just went nuts shooting the lava plume.
Madam Pele was in a good mood and put on a spectacular show that morning. In fact it was so good I got up the next morning and went again at 3am with some other friends. Sadly Sharky had to work that day. But his pro advice served me well the next morning as I escorted some new people out to the plume. Mahalo Plenty Sharky!
I shot over 600 shots total for those two mornings....So guess what I'll be posting for awhile?...give ya a hint...it's red hot, spectacular, and it will kill you if you don't give her your undivided attention.
This is a shot taken with my 100-400mm lens, I'm about 400 yrds away...close as I wanted to get that first morning. If you notice the two guys in the image...well they will be in every image in some form as they sat/stood there the whole time I was shooting. But in retrospect, it gives the image scale, and that's important here so you can see how high these explosions are. Every time the lava spills into the ocean you get a nice little explosion. This is one of them...I got tons more so if you like what you see stay tuned, if not, you will be bored.
Whew....time for me to shut the hell up....
K-den.. much Aloha's for stopping by and I hope you'll like this series...Mahalo's~

I do line the silhouettes in the shot, as you say, they do give scale. Very well done, Clive.

Excellent shot... I thought it was lava and I was right... but you know the 4th of July just happened, so I was thinking it was a little safer for those two guys in you shot... I'm thinking those guys are feeling a little heat - lol... I'm very interested in seeing your lava pictures. This story I've been uploading her at renderosity is going to Hell... we, I need some shots. In the past you've given me permission on a picture, I change it a little and give you credit.... I wasn't thinking of a shot like this, but this image would work great - you wouldn't see the people standing there, but as part of a background, I think this would go great, I got a few ideas instantly when I saw it... so, as long as I change your picture a bit and give you credit, you mind if I use any of your lava shots? I only post at Renderosity, I'm doing this story as I learn my 3D programs, I don't sell any of my work - in the future maybe, right now it's a hobbie... let me know... YOU HAVE BEEN FAVORITIZED!!!
