Description

AloooooooHa! Another shot from this weekends outing with Sharky at the Waikupanaha lava flow into the sea. I choose to stand and shoot from the same spot the whole night as I was unfamiliar with the terrain. It was quite dark as you expect at 3:30am and I wasn't about to take a fall with my camera equipment. Mean while Errol was wandering all over the area looking for lava outbreaks, and every once in awhile I could see his headlamp glowing in the distance. Errol provided me with a small walkie talkie which came in handy after an hour of not hearing from him. That was a great idea as we could get in touch with each other...I worried about him walking around in the dark like that. But he's a great hiker, and knows the terrain well, even in the dark. Once again Madam Pele delighted me with a fire show that was way better than any fireworks show I've ever seen. Those guys sitting on the ridge are actually about a 100 yrds. from the lava plume....still to damn close for me. I estimated the explosians at about 30-50 ft. above the persons in the foreground. As with all my images bigger is better for viewing. So these crazies sitting up closer to the lava, if a drop lands on them, won't it just burn right through them? It's a great shot, and I thank you for showing us through your eyes what you have experienced - and thanks for being smart enough to stay where you were - I like seeing your pictures and don't want to wonder what happened to you - lol

I like the rich, delicious colors here better than the last shot; it looks like an explosion of red hot curry sauce. The soft tones that the long exposure time has lent this scene get a great sense of motion and the surrealism of watching such an epic natural event. Awesome on many levels.
