Une aile de papillon est constituée de deux membranes accolées, organisée par un réseau de nervures, caractéristique de chaque espèce (très visibles chez les piérides, par exemple). Sur les deux faces, l'aile est recouverte d'écailles. Ces écailles, elles-mêmes constituées de chitine, ont plusieurs rôles, parmi lesquels celui qui nous intéresse : support de la couleur et des motifs chromatiques. Leur forme, leur taille et disposition influent sur le rendu des couleurs. Les écailles dont la structure induit la couleur sont dites structurales, les autres contiennent des pigments. A wing of butterfly consists of two joined membranes, organized by a network of veins, characteristic of each species (very visible in the pierids, for example). On the two faces, a wing is covered by scales. These scales, themselves made up of chitin, have several roles, among which that which interests us: support of the color and the chromatic reasons. Their form, their size and provision influence returned colors. The scales of which the structure induces the color are known as structural, the others contain pigments. Ein Schmetterlingsflügel besteht aus zwei angehangenen Membranen, organisiert von einem Adernetz, Eigenschaft jeder Art (sehr sichtbar bei piérides zum Beispiel).
