this mushroom? was growing alone at my favorite park. I was walking and kicked something.looked down and took pictures.the head was very large, about 7-8" in diameter.first time to see one in the wild or anywhere.someone may have posted one2-3 years ago but not sure thanks for looking and any comments I would like to recommend this for your viewing pleasure http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1730759

We used to refer to the kinds of rapidly built apartment buildings that appeared suddenly on campus as "mushroom pads." This is richer than a puffball.

Literally the same comment as of 1402dandoy. Must be an American Lycoperdon, Bovista, Calvatia, Langermannia... (puffballs). Maybe the most similar European species is Calvatia utriformis (C. caelata). Less likely but not impossible may be Scleroderma (earth-balls). Most puffballs are edible when young (section is white). Certainly not at this stage. If you can manage to get Audobon's Field Guide of American Mushrooms and check the above genuses, you wll probably find it.
