Description

My first capture (and first time seeing one since I have been into photog.) of a Robber Fly. I had seen one years ago, but thought it was some odd dragonfly. Although this one was about as big as an avg Dragonfly (a little over 2 inches long) as I got close to it in my yard, I knew it wasn't one. This thing took off into flight and sounded very distinct as well. I was actually kind of intimidated by it. I do know they can bite if provoked. Anyway, it was the first I was able to photo and the last one I have seen since. Thanks for looking. -Bruce Taken with Canon XTi w/50mm 2.5 macro & +4 hoya filter. FULL SIZE for details.

Great shot. The full size image shows wonderful details. The Robberflies are pretty neat critters. They can be as small as 3l8" and as big as this one. Some are definitely hairier than others and the big ones definitely make a lot of noise when they fly. I saw one this size catch a full frown grasshopper in mid flight. It had to land immediately because it bit grabbed more than it could fly with, lol. Thanks for sharing. Lee
