Description

My thanks again to everyone who commented on the last two Marie pieces... "Portrait of Marie" and "Marie: Pinup in Pink." This one is bascially a revision of "Portrait of Marie" incorperating a lot of your suggestions and comments. So - DAZ Studio render @ about 2.5 hours. The teeth and gum materials were setup in much the same way as the schlera and lacrimal materials (respectively). The teeth in particular use a bit of subsurface scattering to make them pearlescent, and a bit of reflection for wetness. I worked on her eyes a lot, these are the actual Marie iris textures, but the eyewhites and bump maps on the whites and corneas are from the 'elite' Amy texture. I thought Marie's eyewhite textures a bit too bloodshot. The lighting is unchanged from 'Marie: Pinup in Pink.' I reduced the bumpmapping on the hair somewhat vs 'Portrait of Marie' and re-posed things for a bit more 'studio wind machine' effect. I introduced the strong depth of field effect, both to try to focus the image on Marie's face and to hide some issues with the shoulder texture and the the posing on the back of the hair. Amazing what you can cover up with a little strategic blurring, especially when it also achieves an artistic effect. The DOF was rendered in camera and not added in post. Regarding Post work on this - I seem to be having some color management issues in photoshop. What I open in PS is not exactly what I'm seeing in the final render and what is getting saved is not exaclty what's on the screen in PS. I've tried some things to compensate for this but I think more research is required. Anyways, for those that obsurved some blotchyness in the previous piece - that was probably down to color managment on this end and my forgeting to work my layers in 16 bit color. Beyond that - the post process was pretty much the same as the last couple of pieces, with the specular bllom added via a mask of the bg and some levels and saturation adjustments applied. Finished with a layer of film grain. My thanks again to everyone who commented on the earlier pieces - this one is better for all of your input. As always constructive critique and observations are most welcome! Pax, --michael

This is really good, if her eyes looked wetter it would be perfect. Try adding a little reflection to them

You know..... I think this is a very lovely character! I didn't see anything wrong with her eyes in the first one at all. As I commented, you did a marvelous job rendering her to begin with. If she were real... this would be a lovely woman to wake up to and look in her eyes for the first thing seen in the mornings. She's got beautiful skin and from the looks of her demeanor... she would be an awesome woman to know. In other words, you have done an awesome job of creating her.

as always, gorgeous light and materials. i really like her expression. i think it could touch the rest of her face a little more. i'm fairly sure i couldn't do a better expression, but i feel almost like her smile doesn't touch her eyes. maybe just a touch more done to her eyes and brow would help. the depth of field is great. you've used both postwork and camera depth blur, right? i'd love to hear your opinion on how they compare. just a lovely portrait. i really like the sweet attitude she projects. as always, incredible work!

OK, you took this picture, right? It's a photo of a real woman; c'mon, tell the truth. Ha! I don't know what to say, but the natural realism you have achieved is phenomenal. She is just about one hundred percent believable. I agree that you could have put a very mild, touch o' squint to one or both eyes, because eyes do crinkle a little even with the smallest smile. All it needs is a touch, so little you would barely notice it, but the subtlety will sell this render even more. There's something about her eyes, either they're not transparent or translucent enough, (they're a touch too opaque), although I have friends from India who have very dark eyes. Other than that, you've got a solid, dead-on photo-real portrait. She's is absolutely, positively fantastic, Michael! You should be feeling very confident and smug now. :) Kudos!

Again a very realistic view on Marie. The DOF effect works great. It pushes the realism up. This looks great on a portrait like this! Greetings Lemy

Well, having seen the previous portrait of Marie I thought you could not impress me more.. Obviously I was wrong.. Opened up both images in full screen and compared them. First let me say that the details of both are STUNNING to say the least, but you have managed to make this one even more detailed and life-like.. The eyes ARE improved by adding the little bloodvessels and the fact the whole image has a bit more contrast is even more realistic.. The DOF (Head/shoulders is perfect also! I wonder if a poser/vue/carrara/bryce/3dmax user could improve this.. I daubt it seriously... This is pure D|S ShowCase material my friend!!!
