Description

AlooooooHa! It's finally dawn on the Waikupanaha plume and as mentioned before it's an overcast day. I have ventured within 100 yards of the plume to get this shot. The ground is warm under my shoes and little spurts of steam are popping up as I walk along gingerly. With each step I hold my breath as the ground gives way with a crunching sound. I am hoping not to find a hollow lava tube under me as I walk along. One wrong step could mean a lobster bath. Another 75 feet or so and I will be standing on the bench. The bench refers to the area where the old flow ends and the newly formed land begins. Every thing in front of the old flow is the bench. Everyone who ever walks the flow knows not to dawdle on the bench. I believe it was on July 4, of this year, 44 acres of the bench fell off into the ocean over night. Overnight we went from having a nice looking cliff to a huge bay. A few years back a photographer was caught on the bench when it collapsed and was never found. Needless to say it's not a great spot to have a family picnic. But for a photographer it's a once in a life time event. As they say "Kids, don't try this at home." I admit it's not the smartest move I ever made, but being that close you just gotta see what's over the edge. Would you? In my next post I venture within 50 ft. of the plume to get some close up shots. For now enjoy the morning sun reflecting off the plume. It's going to be a nice day! Thanks for all your kind comments on this series so far, I do appreciate the time you take to visit....Mahalo and Aloha to all~

That's an amazing shot - been years since I've been to Hawai'i, but I'd always wanted to experience something like this. I checked out those other shots as well, and they are just breathtaking. Stay cool out there, and give the Goddess my regards.

What an amazingly powerful shot! The clairity is amazing. You are braver that I would be to do that. I think I would love to see something that amazing, but I just don't have the adventurer in me. Glad you didn't get hurt!

Tremendous, and maybe the best in the series so far. I love how the plumes are captured so clearly, they almost look like clay sculptures, and then there's that little spray of rocks at the bottom to remind us that things are not, in fact, standing still. Great capture.

I know that feeling of walking with uncertainty over the danger zone very much. You try to walk as light as possible but who are we fooling. The adrenaline goes up a 100 times more than you could ever imagine with the heart skipping more beats than you could count. Be prepared to say that final words of S if it does happen and it ain't sharky_! Good Luck buddy. Looking forward to see your foot prints moving to and from. Excellent series.... Aloha
