Description

Gray on gray makes this aircraft difficult to see but in this case that's the desired outcome of the paint job. This U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet is making a high speed pass in front of us at Wheeler Airport, Kansas City, Missouri, August 24, 2008. I've named this "Almost Supersonic" because it is against all the rules to break the sound barrier over land in the USA. OK, so what was that very loud CRACK!!!! or BOOM!!!! sound just as these boys flew by? Hmmmmm. Wonder if they got in a little hot water after the show? This F-18F is a two seater. The F-18E model is a single seater. This bird is 60 feet long, 16 feet high and has a wingspan of 44 feet. Top speed is listed as Mach 1.8+ If you'd like more details google F-18 Super Hornet and look at Wikipedia. I will soon be adding several more Navy aircraft for you few old "Navy broken wing jocks" that have asked me to be sure not to give all the flying credits to the Air Force. (Now some of you know that wings on Naval aircraft fold up for movement and parking on aircraft carriers. But to some of us here at RR, that's new.) Don't forget to open this image up to a full-sized view. Thanks for stopping by. Bill
