Description

This image was taken on a gray, threatening afternoon at the shore near Kennebunk Port, Maine. A sense of foreboding was in the air. This lobster boat has just reached the safety of the entrance to the harbor. Small craft warnings had been posted by the Coast Guard. A boat very similar to this one had just been broadsided and capsized by an unexpected very large wave and an experienced, local lobsterman tragically drowned. This was the beginning of a three day September "Nor'easter". These are violent storms blowing in from the north east caused by cold Arctic air masses colliding with warm air masses of the Gulf Stream. I had watched this boat coming at full speed and could sense the relief of the two men aboard as they reached the safety of the breakwater.
